(BEIJING, August 11) -- Crowds cheered as Zimbabwean Kristy Coventry touched the wall a full shoulder length ahead of the competition to smash the World Record with a time of 58.77 in Women's 100m Backstroke. The 24-year-old swimmer's new low time replaces the Olympic Record she set just yesterday in the prelims.
Natalie Coughlin (USA) swam second in the event at 59.43 and Nakamura Reiko of Japan in third with a time of 59.64.
Also qualifying for Tuesday's final are: Anastasia Zueva (Russia), Gemma Spofforth (Great Britain), Margaret Hoelzer (United States) and Laure Manaudou (France).
The former world record time of 58.97 was set by Natalie Coughlin in July at the USA Olympic trials.
The Women's 100m Backstroke final will be held on Tuesday, August 12 at 10:23 a.m. (UTC/GMT +8).
