(HONG KONG, August 10) -- Australia leads the way at the end of Dressage on Sunday and the Eventing competition heads forward to the Cross-Country at the Hong Kong Equestrian Venue Beas River on Monday.
Sixty-nine riders from 21 NOCs will ride a course with 39 jumps over 4,560 meters.
Only the lowest three penalty scores from each team contribute to the team total, which is then carried forward.
The top three teams are closely ranked, with only 12 penalties between the first and third positions.
Australia leads on a score of 102.80 penalties. At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the Australians were in the same position after the Dressage section and went on to win gold.
Germany is second on 110.50 penalties.
USA are a close third on 115.60.
Great Britain is playing catch-up after poor Dressage scores left them in fourth place on 121.80.
Italy is in a surprise fifth place on 127.40, ahead of experienced campaigner New Zealand, in sixth place on 136.50.
The Irish team will be relieved to leave dressage behind and move on to their preferred Cross-Country after poor tests left them in tenth place on 160.80.
In the individual rankings, Lucinda Fredericks from Australia with Headley Britannia leads on 30.40 penalties, followed by Karin Donckers from Belgium riding Gazelle De La Brasserie (31.70) and Ingrid Klimke from Germany with Abraxxas on 33.50. All three are seasoned Eventers.
The first rider out on the course will again be Mark Todd of New Zealand, riding Gandalf. Riders will start at intervals of three minutes, weather permitting on Monday morning.
