(BEIJING, August 19) -- In Wednesday's semifinal, Philip Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of the United States will take on Jorge Terceiro and Renato Gomes of Georgia in the Olympic Men's Beach Volleyball competition.
After their unexpected 0-2 defeat to Latvian duo Martins Plavins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs, the second-seeded US pair have maintained good form and fought all the way into the semifinals.
The fifteenth seeded Georgians were defeated in their first two matches, but they managed to win the ones that followed, including the two where they remarkably upset Austria's Clemens Doppler and Peter Gartmayer and the Netherlands' Richard Schuil and Reinder Nummerdor.
The question is whether or not the Georgian duo can continue their giant-killing run. The problem is, this time, they will face real giants.
In the other semifinal, two Brazilian teams will fight for a final berth.
The No. 3 seeds and defending champions Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego of Brazil have shown strong determination to defend their title by beating every team they have encountered so far.
Their opponents, No. 4 seeds Fabio Magalhaes and Marcio Araujo, also from Brazil, are powerful gold medal contenders. As one of the most successful teams on the FIVB World Tour, Magalhaes and Araujo are doubtless capable of challenging the unbeaten defending champions.
