(HONG KONG, August 16) -- The battle for the Individual Dressage gold medal is a close fight, with Germany's Isabell Werth at 75.20 percent, barely securing her lead as she hunts for a sixth gold medal. Defending double gold medalist Anky van Grunsven from the Netherlands and Salinero are at 74.96 points. Both leading horses had major hiccups in their performances, with Werth's partner Satchmo shying in piaffe and Salinero cantering in half-pass.
Werth's test started with scores in the mid-80s, which dropped dramatically to the lower 70s after Satchmo spooked in the extended walk. She staged a valiant recovery to climb back in the scoring.
Heike Kemmer from Great Britain, in her second Olympic Games, is in third place at 73.00 percent, and aiming for her first Individual medal.
Steffen Peters from the United States and Ravel are in fourth place on 71.8 percent after losing points in the first pirouette.
A surprise challenger is Alexandra Korelova from Russia on former Police horse Balagur. They rank fifth on 71.40 percent.
The gap between the top five competitors is narrow, with a difference of only 3.80 percent between first and fifth place.
